People are designed to grow. Without growth, we will not be satisfied. Having goals helps us learn new things, have new experiences and have meaning.

However, many people avoid goals because they feel that setting goals can lead to perfectionism and disappointment. But this does not have to be the matter. If you sprinkle a little grace with your goals, you will achieve a flourishing state of mind.

Goals + Grace = Growth

Grace leads to forgiveness

Having grace allows you to accept things as they are as you grow. There are several goals that I set for myself last year that I did not achieve. Instead of wallowing in guilt for not achieving my goals, I give myself pity and I understand that not achieving certain goals is part of the process.

Life happens and things change, so if I didn’t achieve a goal, it could be due to things I didn’t expect. Having Grace allows me to accept life as it is. Not achieving a goal says nothing about me; it shows that sometimes life gets in the way.

I’m going into goal setting mode and I know I feel sorry for this. Looking at the New Year, you have the powerful combination of goals + grace.

How to start planning your goals

Start goal planning with intentionality and Vision. Have a Vision of what you want to achieve, because without a Vision you don’t know where you are going. One of my favorite Bible verses talks about Vision: without Vision, people perish.

Every month I plan a day of reflection in order to understand where I am going and how far I have come in my process. This step is critical because reflection allows more growth.

Every December, my husband and I block out a whole morning to reflect and set goals for the coming year. I take my favorite diary and pen and we get away from our daily routine somewhere. Listen in for some ideas that will help you find a great place to plan your goals.

Think back over the past year to reflect on what worked and what didn’t work for you. Don’t forget to show mercy to yourself for the things that didn’t work out the way you planned. It also gives you the opportunity to customize your plans for the New year.
